Peabody Housing

A social value toolkit, maximising social, economic and environmental value across procurement

The Challenge

Peabody owns and manages more than 102,000 homes across London, the home counties and surrounding areas, housing more than 220,000 people. The organisation has a strong social purpose and its mission is to help people to make the most of their lives.

“Social Value” is a core part of Peabody’s procurement strategy and wider strategic commitment to maximise social, economic and environmental benefit. For Peabody, social value is the additional value it creates through all of its buying activity and where it works with suppliers and contractors to agree how it can support Peabody residents and their communities as part of the work they are doing.

Following an extensive review, Peabody asked Verity London to support it to raise the profile of social value within the business, so it plays a key part in tendering beyond the procurement team.

Our Approach

To understand Peabody’s objectives and opportunities for communicating its social value, we held a working session with key stakeholders.

Verity London then developed an on-line “one stop shop”, where all information relating to social value can be found. A dedicated, comprehensive and interactive “Social Value Toolkit” explaining the benefits and setting out Peabody’s commitment and approach.

As partner agency, Verity London provided design, development and delivery of this core asset. This included ensuring both the written and visual content was clear, compelling, well presented, and accessible for all audiences, with technical information simplified into digestible chunks.

The toolkit is actively used across the organisation by both commissioners of services and by teams more widely. It helps employees involved in contract tendering to support communities to be healthier, wealthier and happier. It also helps all Peabody staff to have a deep understanding of Peabody’s Social Value, supporting Peabody’s employee engagement objectives.

The toolkit is also shared with external partners, assisting stakeholders to understand more about Peabody’s purpose and impact across the communities in which it operates.
